GONU JHA
At Darbhanga there wasn’t anyone who didn’t know Gonu Jha. He was a very smart man. He was famous not only for his presence of mind but also for his wit and humor. Hence, everybody loved Gonu Jha. The king of Darbhanga couldn’t put a step forward without Gonu Jha. He had to be present in the king’s court every day or the king would become very angry.
GONU JHA, THE KING’S FAVOURITE
Quite often the king would reward Gonu for his presence of mind. But this wasn’t anything extraordinary. The king had a big heart. Moreover, who doesn’t like an intelligent man? Now the king’s reward can’t be anything plain and simple. At times he would give a bag full of gold coins and again at some other time he would gift strings of pearls, or a bigha of land.
THIEVES AND THE CAPTAIN WERE ANGRY IN VERY SHORT FAIRY TALES STORY
Now the thieves became very envious of Gonu Jha. He neither had to work hard like them nor had to take up any risk or spend sleepless nights. Only through his presence of mind and oratory skill Gonu was earning so much! They too had to labor their mind. They had to wait with patience in the dark tolerating mosquito bites unless the people fall asleep. Then very cautiously they had to make their way into the house. And by chance they got caught, then people would beat them black and blue.

No, these thieves would get back their peace of mind only if they rob Gonu Jha’s house. Hence they selected five best thieves from among themselves, and started for Gonu’s house. Now Gonu Jha had a very conscious sleep. Even a very slight sound awakened him. He understood the thieves were trying to enter into his house.

All of a sudden Gonu asked his wife, “Monu, have you kept all the money and jewellery locked up in the trunk? Thieves are roaming everywhere in the village.
MONU FOOLS THE CAPTAIN AND THE THIEVES
Gonu Jha’s wife Monu Jha was no less than her husband. With a big yawn she said, “C’mon you sleep tight. Don’t disturb me. In the trunk I’ve kept pickles, sweets, and papads. Our pussy is so greedy! She opens the containers and finishes off everything! I’m not a fool to keep valuable items at home. In the peepal tree behind our house, I’ve kept everything. I’ve tied up all jewellery and money in a black cloth and have hung it from the tree. Now you go to sleep!”
THE THIEVES AND THE CAPTAIN LISTENED CAREFULLY
All the five thieves listened very attentively and quietly slipped out of the house. Gonu Jha boasts of such wit! He discussed with his wife so loudly that the thieves heard everything. Anyway the things became easier for them now. They need not dig any place.
THE CAPTAIN OF THE THIEVES SPOTTED THE PEEPAL TREE
They very easily spotted the peepal tree. In those days there was no vapour or electric lamps in the streets. So everybody had to depend on moon light. Hence, the thieves strained their eyes to inspect all the branches of the tree.

At last they saw the black cloth bag hanging from a branch. Oh what a luck! Immediately two of them climbed up the tree. They had to jump from the tree holding the back close to their chest. Otherwise everyone can hear the tinkling of jewelleries.

Three of the thieves stood below the tree holding a big cloth. And then they jumped…. Within a couple of minutes all five thieves turned red like tomatoes. What they brought down the tree was not a bag full of jewelleries but a beehive!

Within moments all five thieves were struggling from bee stings. The captain of the thieves was extremely angry. How dare Gonu Jha fool them! So the captain decided to go Gonu’s house himself. He would select the thieves too. Hence with the best thieves he went to Gonu Jha’s house.
THE CAPTAIN OF THE THIEVES AGAIN INTRUDED GONU’S HOUSE
It was summer season. All the windows of the house were open. As the thieves tried to enter the house through a window, they heard the whispering of Gonu and his wife.
MONU TELLS GONU A SECRET
Gonu Jha said, “Monu, the last time you fooled the thieves very well. Now tell me truthfully where you have actually kept the jewelleries and money?” His wife Monu replied, “No, this time I’ll tell you everything genuinely. I’ve put all the jewelleries and money in four separate pitchers. In the barren land behind our house I’ve dug four holes in four different parts of the land. Then I’ve put the four pitchers in those four holes. It is impossible for anyone to dig out those four pitchers without my assistance. So I’ve no worries now. Last time I had seen the thieves so I told a lie.”
THE CAPTAIN AND THE THIEVES ARE FOOLED IN VERY SHORT FAIRY TALES STORY
“Thank God! Now I can sleep peacefully,” said Gonu Jha. The thieves along with the captain at once went to the land behind Gonu Jha’s house. They were tired ploughing the field but did not find any pitcher. What a stony ground! Tired and exhausted all the thieves returned to their houses.

Early morning Gonu Jha woke up and told his wife to quickly give him a glass of warm milk. After drinking the milk he went straight to the king’s palace.
THE KING QUESTIONS GONU
As soon as he entered the royal court, the king asked, “The day before yesterday I gave you a piece of land Gonu. O, what a fertile piece of land it is! I believe you have sowed potatoes, brinjals, and other vegetables.”

“That is what I’ve come to tell you, your majesty,” said Gonu rubbing his palm. “You helped me a lot your majesty by sending your men last night. They ploughed my land so well. Now after returning home, I’ll sow the seeds.”

The king was speechless hearing everything from Gonu. He gave Gonu Jha two pieces of land as a reward of his wit. And this time the land was very fertile.
