THERE LIVED A KING

                                            THERE LIVED A KING

As soon as children here the words: now there lived a king, their eyes sparkle with glee. They know now its story time.

                                                      THERE LIVED A KING

GOLDEN STICK AND SILVER STICK

Now there lived a king with his minister, marshal and magistrate. Each one of them had a son. All the four young men were very good friends. All day long they only enjoyed and did no work. So the king, the minister, the marshal and the magistrate were fed up with their sons. So they ordered their wives to give their sons ash for lunch instead of food. All the four mothers were very upset at this but could not defy their husband’s order.

THERE LIVED A KING IN A FAIRYTALE

 The four young men were shocked to see ash instead of and angrily left their house. All of them met with their horses in the field where they usually spent their time. They decided to live the kingdom and go where ever their fate takes them. All four rode their horses and entered into a forest.

A FAIRYTALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE PRINCESS

It was night time and they were very hungry and tired. Hence they decided to rest. They saw a head of a deer. They decided to cook it and have their dinner. But as soon as they touched the deer head it turned into an ogress and started to gulp them with their horses. But before the ogress could catch the prince he requested the mango tree to hide him within it. The tree opened up and hid the prince in its trunk.

IN A PALACE THERE LIVED A KING

The ogress was very angry as she couldn’t eat the prince. She now turned herself into a beautiful woman and sat under the tree and wept. The king of the neighbouring kingdom had come into the forest for hunting. He saw a beautiful woman weeping alone and took pity on her. He brought her along with him to his palace and married her.

A FAIRYTALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE PRINCESS

The ogress now remained in the palace as a queen and planned how to eat the prince. One day she laid jute sticks under her mattress and lied down on the bed. She announced that she had bone crunching disease. The king came immediately. As she turned on the bed, the jute sticks below broke and made noise. The king thought the queen’s bones were cracking. He immediately called the royal doctors but the doctors even could not cure the queen.

THERE LIVED A KING, AND A QUEEN

She then said that in the forest there is a mango tree. Only if anyone burns the trunk of that tree and give smoke in her room she will get well. Immediately the king sent his men to bring the trunk of the mango tree. Mango tree turned the prince into a mango and dropped him in the river.

A FAIRYTALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE PRINCESS

A big rohu fish swallowed the mango. When the royal maids gave smoke in the queen’s room she understood everything. She said to the king that there is a big rohu fish in the river. There is a mango in its tummy. That mango will only cure her.

Fishermen threw nets in the river and caught the rohu fish. But before the fishermen could catch the fish, it turned the prince into a snail and threw him in the river. When the fish was brought and cut no one could find any mango in its tummy. Now let’s see what happened to the prince in snail. The river waves brought the snail at the foot of a village woman.

A FAIRYTALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE PRINCESS

Seeing the snail she threw it hard on the river step and it broke. From the snail came out the prince. The village woman was very scared. The prince assured her and told her all that had happened with him. She took pity on him and took him to her house. Now the ogress has come to know everything about the prince.

ONCE THERE LIVED A KING

She told the king that in this way she will not get cured. In the village lived a woman in her house lived a prince. Only he can go to her mother’s house and bring medicine from her. Then only she will be cured. The king sent his soldiers to the village woman’s house to bring the prince. The prince tried to explain the king that his wife was an ogress in reality. But the king would not believe him and was very angry. So the prince had no other option.

THERE LIVED A KING WHO FOUGHT THE OGRESS

After crossing seven oceans and thirteen rivers the prince reached the land where the ogress’ mother lived. He saw a huge palace and entered into it. The prince couldn’t see anyone inside. He went from room to room and got struck on reaching one room. On a bed lied a beautiful princess in deep sleep. The prince saw a golden stick at her head. He picked it up out of curiosity.

A FAIRYTALE OF THE PRINCE AND THE PRINCESS

Then he saw a silver stick at her feet. He picked that up too. As he was turning the sticks they touched each other and the princess sat up on the bed. She asked the prince what he was doing in the land of the ogres. The prince told her everything and asked her why she was there though she was a human like him.

THERE LIVED A KING, AND A PRINCE

The princess said the ogres had killed her parents. The queen ogress liked her, so she brought her here along with her. She said that she knew the secret of these ogres’ life. As they were talking they heard the sound of the ogres. The princess hid the prince in a corner of the palace where the ogres never go. The next night when the ogres left the palace again, the prince came and woke the princess. The princess took him to a pond. In the middle of the pond was a pillar. On the top of the pillar was a cage in which there was a parrot and a macaw. The princess said that the life of the ogres was in the macaw and the life of the queen was in the parrot.  

THERE LIVED A KING IN A FAIRYLAND

The princess had to kill the macaw but make sure no drop of blood falls on the ground. Each drop of blood will give rise to hundred ogres. The prince brought down the cage, took the macaw, and placed it on his chest and cut its throat. And with that all the ogres died. The prince and the princess now came to the kingdom where the ogress lived. He told the king to take him to the queen as he had brought medicine for her. The ogress knew what all had happened. She came to her real self and tried to catch the prince. But before she could attack the prince tore the neck of the parrot and killed the ogress.

IN A HUGE PALACE THERE LIVED A KING

 Then he cut open her tummy and released all his three friends. The prince along with his friends and the princess went back to his kingdom. Everyone in the kingdom was happy to get them back. The prince married the princess and they all became obedient. Their parents had no more complaints against them. They all lived happily ever after.
