I have noticed toddlers have a special attraction for stories where animals play major roles. They love to hear animals speak and behave like we human beings. Keeping this in mind I have selected this story for Toddler’s Fairy Tales. This story was composed by my father and I have grown up hearing this story again and again. Hence, I thought of sharing it with those parents and grandparents who are always in search of new stories for their little ones.

                                                                            DING DONG

One fine morning Mr. Tiger wearing a track suit gave a call to Mrs. Tigress, “Tigress where are you?” Mrs. Tigress quickly came out. She too was wearing a track suit. Both of them then went to Mr. Lion’s house. Mr. Tiger started shouting, “Lion you are late again today. I’m waiting outside for you.” Mr. Lion came out along with Mrs. Lioness. Then all four started with their morning workout.

While Lion, Lioness, Tiger, and Tigress were busy with their workout, there came Mr. Elephant. He was walking stealthily with huge body. Both Lion and Tiger greeted him and asked, “How are you Uncle Elephant? You too must have been jogging here like us?” Elephant replied, “No, I’m not fit like you. I can’t jog. I was only strolling here.” “Hmm. That’s true Uncle Elephant. You are so huge,” said Tiger. “Yes, and people say……..” paused Lion. Elephant asked, “What do they say? Tell me.”

“No nothing serious. O don’t bother them uncle,” said Tiger. But Elephant insisted them to say. Tiger and Lion both winked at each other and began,

                                                                  Uncle Elephant

                                                              Has a huge tummy,

                                                                Eats lots of hay,

                                                             He finds it yummy!

Elephant was so angry hearing this that he started jumping. He tried to catch Lion and Tiger with his trunk. But both Lion and Tiger ran away from there with Lioness and Tigress. They did not stop until they reached their respective houses.

Back in their homes both Lioness and Tigress scolded their husbands for making Uncle Elephant so angry. Then they both got busy with their household works while Lion and Tiger sat with a newspaper sipping their cups of tea.

Now let us return to the place where we had left Uncle Elephant trumpeting in anger. He was breaking down trees one after the other. At one time he got tired of breaking down trees. And then he started crying. First his eyes swelled up with tears. Next the tears started streaming down his eyes. Then he started crying very loudly. Tears gushed out of his eyes like waterfall. A small pool formed where Uncle Elephant was standing.

A monkey and a parrot were going to the spring in the middle of the forest. All the animals of that forest go there for bathing and drinking water. Both the monkey and the parrot were carrying their soaps and towels. On their way they saw Uncle Elephant standing in the middle of a tiny pool. They came near and saw it was not just any ordinary pool. Uncle Elephant was crying so much that a tiny pool formed.

Both the monkey and the parrot thought, “What is the point of going to the stream so far away? Here is a nice little pool. Here is a nice little pool. We can take a nice bath here.” And as they thought. They dived into the pool and nicely took a bath. Just then Mr. Rhino arrived there.

TODDLER’S FAIRY TALES

He saw Uncle Elephant crying and a monkey and a parrot bathing in the pool formed from his tears. First Rhino scolded the monkey and the parrot for bathing in Uncle Elephant’s tears. When they both left, Rhino asked Elephant what the matter was. Uncle Elephant in between his sobs told the whole matter to Rhino. First, Rhino calmed down Uncle Elephant. Then he promised Uncle Elephant, “Don’t worry my friend I’ll definitely scold Lion and Tiger for making such fun of you.” Uncle Elephant was now happy and agreed to return back home.

TODDLER’S TALES

Mr. Rhino went home, had his breakfast and went straight to meet Lion and Tiger. He was fed up with these two friends. So many times Mr. Rhino had told Tiger and Lion not to make fun of Elephant but they will never change. They keep on messing with him and Mr. Rhino had to leave all his work and settle the matter.

Rhino knew where he would find Tiger and Lion at this time of the day. Accordingly he went straight to the place where Tiger and Lion wait everyday for their office car pool.

Mr. Rhino found Tiger and Lion waiting for their car pool. He went to them and scolded them very hard for making fun of Uncle Elephant. Both the friends promised Mr. Rhino that they would say sorry to Uncle Elephant. Rhino said, “Alright then, I’ll bring Elephant to your office. Show him respect and say sorry to him.

Accordingly Mr. Rhino brought Uncle Elephant to the office of Lion and Tiger. It was afternoon. Tiger and Lion gave him a warm welcome. Mr. Rhino once more warned Lion and Tiger to take proper care of Uncle Elephant and then went and sat beside Elephant.

Tiger said, “Uncle Elephant please have some refreshments first.” Lion quickly brought a big drum of orange juice. Uncle Elephant dipped his trunk and within a moment emptied the full drum. He seemed happy now. Uncle Elephant said, “This time I am forgiving you both but make sure that you don’t do this again.”

TODDLER’S FAIRY TALES

Both Lion and Tiger said, “We are extremely sorry Uncle Elephant. We promise never more to make fun of you by saying,

                                                                  Uncle Elephant

                                                              Has a huge tummy,

                                                                Eats lots of hay,

                                                             He finds it yummy!

Uncle Elephant was about to shout again when Mr. Rhino quickly took him away from the place.
