Keeping in mind the needs of stories for children, I’ve taken this story from Wonderful Fairy Tales. A story about a very feeble man who killed a man eater, a mad elephant and captured a band of dacoits only with the help of his wit.

PALM LEAF SOLDIER
No in reality there can be no soldier made of palm leaf. If a person is very skinny but pretends to be brave is mockingly termed – a palm leaf soldier.
NIDHIRAM SARDAR IN WONDERFUL FAIRY TALES
Nidhiram Sardar of village Aadul was literally a palm leaf soldier. Hence everyone made fun of him. But Nidhiram was a very brave man. He has killed tigers, cheetahs, bears, and many more animals.
A TIGER KILLED NIDHIRAM’S GOAT IN WONDERFUL FAIRY TALES
One day a tiger killed Nidhiram’s goat. Nidhiram was very angry. He decided to kill the tiger. But Nidhiram was determined. He tied up a cloth bundle and went straight to the market. There he bought his necessary items and then with long steps went towards the forest.
NIDHIRAM ENTERS THE FOREST
All those who saw Nidhiram entering the forest said to his mother, “Your son will never return. He has gone to kill the tiger.” Hearing this, the old lady burst into tears.
NIDHIRAM MIXED OPIUM IN MEAT
Now Nidhiram is no fool. He had pre-planned everything. Nidhiram took a big chunk of meat and filled it with opium. Then he climbed up a tree and waited for the tiger to come. After a long time, the tiger came. He saw Nidhiram sitting on the tree. The tiger tried to catch Nidhiram. As he was very skinny, he very easily adjusted himself on a thin branch of the tree. Hence, the tiger could not catch him.

What to do? The tiger sat under the tree and waited for Nidhiram to come down from the tree. As soon as Nidhiram got a chance, he threw the chunk of meat at the tiger. It first sniffed and licked the piece of meat. Then when he was sure that there is nothing wrong with the meat, he gulped it down. The tiger then stared at Nidhiram with the expectation of getting more chunks of meat. But Nidhiram sat relaxed humming a tune.

The tiger kept staring at Nidhiram for some time. Then gradually his eyelids became heavy and he fell asleep. With so much opium in his stomach, there is no doubt the tiger will fall asleep. Nidhiram climbed down the tree and shook the tiger. But the tiger didn’t move.
THE VILLAGERS ARE SPEECHLESS IN WONDERFUL FAIRY TALES
Then he took out a billhook knife from his cloth bundle and cut the head of the tiger. When Nidhiram entered his village holding the head of the tiger, all the villagers who saw him became speechless. He told them to go to the forest and there they would see the body of the tiger. It was since then that the villagers started to respect Nidhiram. With a small billhook, he killed a huge tiger but there was not even a tiny scratch on his body! After this incident, his name spread far and wide.
PALM LEAF SOLDIER KILLED A MAD ELEPHANT
Even the notorious dacoits of the surrounding areas paid respect to Nidhiram when he passed them. Once, a landlord of the neighboring village came to meet Nidhiram. A mad elephant was causing much damage in his village. He had killed many villagers and destroyed many houses. Many hunters had tried to kill the mad elephant but failed. Hence, the landlord requested Nidhiram to save his village from the torment of the mad elephant.

Nidhiram, on hearing everything said, “O, killing a mad elephant is a child’s play for me. You send a palanquin tomorrow. I’ll go and kill it.” Hearing this, the landlord was taken aback. He wondered how such a skinny man could kill a tiger with a billhook. And now he said killing a mad elephant is a child’s play! Anyway he sent the palanquin punctually to bring Nidhiram to his village to kill the mad elephant.
THE MAD ELEPHANT ARRIVES IN WONDERFUL FAIRY TALES
It was almost dark when he entered the village. But since it was a full moon night, the palanquin bearers faced no trouble. The trouble, however, arrived in the form of the mad elephant. The bearers put down the palanquin and ran away shouting, “Flee from here sir, the mad elephant is coming!”
PALM LEAF SOLDIER LAYS A TRAP FOR THE MAD ELEPHANT
Nidhiram quickly left the palanquin. He took out some ripe bananas from his cloth bundle. Nidhiram had filled each banana with opium and poison. He laid those drugged bananas on the road and he hid in a nearby ditch. The elephant arrived. As soon as it saw the palanquin, it crushed it like a matchbox. Then its eyes fell upon the bananas on the road. He ate those and stealthily walked away. Nidhiram also came out of the ditch and with his billhook followed the elephant.
THE MAD ELEPHANT FEELS SLEEPY
The elephant had hardly walked a distance when it started feeling sleepy. It swayed a little and lay down on the ground and fell into a deep sleep. A sleep from which it will never wake up. Nidhiram then kicked the animal to make sure it is dead. Then taking out the billhook from his bundle he started to cut the trunk of the animal. He then cut the tusks of the elephant.

In the meantime, the palanquin bearers went to the landlord to give him the information about the mad elephant. They even said, “Lord, the mad elephant must have crushed the palanquin by now!” He immediately left for the place along with the bearers and about a hundred of his men. The men walked forward beating drums and canisters to scare away the elephant. At some distance, they saw the crushed palanquin. Little ahead they saw a strange sight.

Nidhiram was sitting on the road with the trunk and the tusks of the elephant beside him. The elephant-like huge mountain was lying at the side of the road. There was blood everywhere. The landlord was very surprised. Nidhiram said, “I told the mad elephant so many times not to crush the palanquin. But it didn’t listen to me. So I had to kill it.” Everybody started shouting, “Long live Nidhiram Sardar!” The landlord was very impressed with him. He made Nidhiram the chief of his guards. Nidhiram now stays in the landlord’s huge mansion and everybody respects him.
