How they manipilated the king to punish the youngest queen.
ONCE UPON A TIME – A FAIRY TALE
SEVEN CHAMPA BROTHERS
Once upon a time, there lived a king who had seven queens. All the elder six queens were very rude and haughty. But the youngest queen of the king was very sweet tempered. Hence, everybody in the kingdom loved the youngest queen. No doubt the king loved her the most. For this the six elder queens were jealous of the youngest queen.
THE KING WAS UNHAPPY IN ONCE UPON A TIME FAIRY-TALE
However, there was one thing that made the king very unhappy. The king had no heir. He did not know who will succeed him and take up the responsibility of the big kingdom after his death. Days passed by in this way.
ROYAL DOCTOR GAVE HAPPY NEWS IN ONCE UPON A TIME
One day the royal doctor informed the king, the youngest queen would give birth to the heir of the kingdom. The king was extremely happy. He announced to open the royal treasury to his people. Let them come and take whatever they wish.” The elder queens were very jealous.
SEVEN CHAMPA BROTHERS AND THEIR PARUL SISTER
The king asked the royal goldsmith to make a gold shackle. He then tied one end of the shackle to his waist and the other end to the queen’s waist. The king then told the queen, “When you give birth to our son, give a pull to this shackle. I’ll come at once.” The king then went straight to the royal court.
THE ENVIOUS QUEENS IN ONCE UPON A TIME
All the other six queens came to the youngest queen’s room. As soon as they came, they pulled the shackle. The king immediately arrived with trumpets, royal priests, and his ministers. But there was nothing. He was very sad and angry with his six queens. The king said, “If you again pull this shackle for no reason, I’ll punish you.”

The youngest queen gave birth to seven sons and one daughter. The babies were as pretty as angels. But the six envious queens did not pull the shackle for even once now. The youngest queen asked in a very low voice, “Sisters, won’t you show me the faces of my babies?” The elder queens curled their lips and said, “You’ve given birth to few mice and crabs.” Hearing this, the youngest queen fainted.
THE KING IS ANGRY ONCE UPON A TIME
Then the six elder queens quietly put the seven new-borns in earthen pots and buried in the garbage heap. After that they pulled the shackle. The king again came with trumpets, royal priests, and his courtiers. The elder queens quickly brought some mice and crabs and showed the king. The king became so angry that he ordered the youngest queen to leave the palace immediately.
THE ELDER QUEENS WERE HAPPY IN ONCE UPON A TIME
The elder queens were very happy now. They were at last able to get rid of the king’s favorite queen. The youngest queen was full of sorrow. She had no place to go. She wandered here and there.
KING REMAINED UNHAPPY IN ONCE UPON A TIME
In this way days passed by. The king always remained unhappy. All his subjects also forgot to be happy. No bird chirped in his kingdom. There were no flowers in the king’s garden.
THERE ARE NO FLOWER IN THE GARDEN
One day the gardener came to the king and said, “Your Majesty, there are no flowers in the garden. In the garbage heap, there are seven champa trees and a lily plant, all blooming with flowers.” The king said, “Then bring me the flowers. I’ll offer the flowers to God.” The gardener went to pluck flowers.
CHAMPA TREES REFUSE TO GIVE FLOWERS IN ONCE UPON A TIME
On seeing the gardener, lily called out, “Seven champa brothers, wake up please!” The seven champa trees shook themselves and asked, “Why are you calling us sister lily?” Lily said, “The king wants flowers. Shall we give him flowers or not?” At once the seven champa trees grew taller and shook their crest, “We won’t give flowers, but we’ll rise higher. First the king will come, then we’ll give flowers!”
SEVEN CHAMPA BROTHERS REFUSE TO GIVE FLOWERS TO THE KING
The gardener went to the king and told him everything. The king was surprised. However, he decided to go and find out himself. When the king arrived the lily again called out, “Seven champa brothers wake up please!” The seven champa trees again asked, “Why are you calling us sister?” The lily replied, “The king has come to pluck flowers. Shall we give him flowers or not?” The seven champa trees again grew little higher and said, “We won’t give flowers, but rise higher. The eldest queen must come, then we’ll give flowers.”
ELDEST QUEEN COMES TO PLUCK FLOWERS ONCE UPON A TIME
The king summoned his eldest queen. She came tinkling her heavy gold anklets. The eldest queen raised her hand to pluck flowers when the lily called out, “Seven champa brothers wake up please!” The seven champa trees once more asked, “Why are you calling us sister lily?” And then lily replied, “The eldest queen has come to pluck flowers. Shall we give her flowers or not?” Again the seven champa trees grew higher and said, “We won’t give flowers, but rise higher. The second queen must come, then we’ll give flowers.” Hence, the king summoned the second queen.
ALL THE SIX QUEENS CAME IN ONCE UPON TIME
In this way one by one all six queens came. But the seven champa trees and the lily plant refused to give them flowers, and rose higher and higher. When the sixth queen came, the champa trees told, “The youngest queen must come. Then we’ll give flowers.” The king sent all his soldiers in search of his youngest queen. At last the soldiers found her near a hut collecting cowdung for making cowdung cakes. They brought her to the palace. She was in tattered clothes. There was cowdung all over her body. In that way she went to pluck flowers.

And at once the seven champa trees quietly came down to the ground. Seven handsome princes and one pretty princess fell into the lap of the youngest queen. They were all calling her ‘mother’. Everybody present there were surprised. Tears rolled down the king’s eyes. The six elder queens shivered in fear. The king then ordered his soldiers to imprison the elder queens. He went inside the palace with his youngest queen and seven princes and a princess.
They all lived happily ever after.
