In this lesson I shall show you some common errors we make in the use of Passive Voice.
- THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Present Tense is formed by using am/ is / are + past participle
Incorrect : I teach by Mrs. James.
Correct : I am taught by Mrs. James.
Incorrect : We are like by our parents.
Correct : We are liked by our parents.
Incorrect : You are offer a job.
Correct : You are offered a job.
Incorrect : They are arrest by the police.
Correct : They are arrested by the police.
Incorrect :She praised for her courage.
Correct : She is praised for her courage.
Incorrect : He killed in the accident.
Correct : He is killed in the accident.
- The PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Present Continuous Tense is formed by using am / is / are + being + past participle.
Incorrect : I am always watched by my mother.
Correct : I am always being watched by my mother.
Incorrect : We are still helped by her.
Correct : We are still being helped by her.
Incorrect : You are kept in waiting.
Correct : You are being kept in waiting.
Incorrect : They are taking into custody.
Correct : They are being taken into custody.
Incorrect : He is questioning by the police.
Correct : He is being questioned by the police.
- THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE :
THE Passive Voice in the Present Perfect Tense is formed by using has / have + been + past participle.
Incorrect : I have offered a lecturer’s post.
Correct : I have been offered a lecturer’s post.
Incorrect :We have always encouraged by our parents.
Correct : We have always been encouraged by our parents.
Incorrect : You have paid the full amount by the company.
Correct : You have been paid the full amount by the company.
Incorrect : They have refused admission.
Correct : They have been refused admission.
Incorrect : He has arrested on the charge of theft.
Correct : He has been arrested on the charge of theft.
Incorrect : She has married to a rich merchant.
Correct : She has been married to a rich merchant.
- THE PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE :
The Passive Voice is NOT POSSIBLE in the Present Perfect Continuous Tense.
Incorrect : We have been helping by our aunt.
Correct : We have been helped by our aunt.
Incorrect : They have been giving money by us.
Correct : They have been given money by us.
Incorrect : You have been advising by my mother.
Correct : You have been advised by my mother.
- THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE :
The Passive Voice in theSimple Past Tense is formed by using was / were / + past participle.
Incorrect : I greatly assisted in the work.
Correct : I am greatly assisted in the work.
Incorrect : We were insult by them.
Correct : We were insulted by them.
Incorrect : They granted bail yesterday.
Correct : They were granted bail yesterday.
Incorrect : He was bring up by his uncle.
Correct : He was brought up by his uncle.
- THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Past Continuous Tense is formed by using was / were + being + past participle.
Incorrect : The letters were often sent to her address.
Correct : The letters were often being sent to her address.
Incorrect : We were always disturbed by visitors.
Correct : We were always being disturbed by visitors.
Incorrect : They were continually beaten by the hostel warden.
Correct : They were continually being beaten by the hostel warden.
- THE PAST PERFECT TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Past Perfect Tense is formed by using had + been + past participle.
Incorrect : The bank loan had sanctioned to us.
Correct : The bank loan had been sanctioned to us.
Incorrect : The patients had taken to the hospital.
Correct : The patients had been taken to the hospital.
Incorrect : My pocket money had cut down.
Correct : My pocket money had been cut down.
Incorrect : Mrs. Jones had appointed to the teacher’s post.

- THE SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Simple Future Tense is formed by using shall / will + be + past participle.
Incorrect : I shall invited to the function.
Correct : I shall be invited to the function.
Incorrect : You will given a chance to prove your talent.
Correct : You will be given a chance to prove your talent.
Incorrect : They will helped by the government.
Correct : They will be helped by the government.
Incorrect : The child will be feed with mother’s milk.
Correct : The child will be fed with mother’s milk.
- THE FUTUREPERFECT TENSE :
The Passive Voice in the Future Perfect is formed by usingshall / will + have + been + past participle.
Incorrect : The letter will have sent by tomorrow.
Correct : The letter will have been sent by tomorrow.
Incorrect : We shall have given the money next week.
Correct : We shall have been given the money next week.
Incorrect : They will suspended from tomorrow.
Correct : They will have been suspended from tomorrow.
